What will the course involve?
- Consultation with clients
- How shampoos and conditioning products affect the hair and scalp.
- Basic and creative cutting hair including one length, fringe cutting, precision cutting techniques, scissor over comb, texturising, layering, graduation and clipper work and working with the natural growth patterns of the hair, cutting angles and resulting weight distribution, and balance and the degree of graduation.
- Basic and creative Style and finish hair create a look including blow drying, hair-up styles, setting and dressing, finger drying, plaiting and current techniques for drying and finishing hair.
- Perming understand the basic principles of perming.
- Colour and lighten hair complete a range of woven highlights including T-section, half head. Full head using temporary, semi-permanent, quasi-permanent, permanent colour application, including colour change (depth and tone) techniques, the principles of colour selection and when to use the different types of lighteners and toners available.
- Customer service you become proficient in greeting clients in a friendly manner and be courteous at all times including professional conversations; undertake wider salon duties, including reception duties where appropriate and always work safely and hygienically. Our Apprentices are professional and have a passion for the industry; a commitment to quality, a positive attitude and show a willingness to learn.
Entry requirements
- To be an Apprentice you will be employed in a salon/barbers/spa
- If you do not hold a grade 4 or above/C in English and/or maths you will be required to study Functional Skills as this is part of the course.
- You will attend off the job training sessions, enrichment activities including competitions and additional courses.
General comments
You will need to have excellent attendance. This qualification includes an end point assessment (EPA) in practical skills. EPA is set at a very high standard and graded Pass or Distinction, good preparation for EPA is vital.
What will the course lead to?
Continue your studies in hairdressing to Level 3, upskill in barbering or develop skills in beauty therapy. Once a Level 3 is achieved you may want to become a fully qualified stylist/colourist, work towards being an Assessor, be self-employed, apply for a manager role or progress onto a degree course.

Caio
Studied the Level 3 Hair Professional Apprenticeship. He works in a salon and comes to The Academy one day per week for off the job training. He completed the Level 2 and scored top marks in his end point assessment. Caio is an Academy Ambassador and really enjoys competition work.
