What will the course involve?

You will cover the range of essential practical skills and knowledge which will help you get a job in the barbering industry:

  • Working in the hair/barbering industry
  • Follow health and safety in thew salon/barbers
  • Client consultation for services
  • Shampoo condition hair and scalp and scalp massage
  • Promote products and services to clients
  • Cut men’s hair and Cut facial hair
  • Colour and lighten hair and Styling men’s hair
  • Create an image based on a theme in the hair sector
  • Salon reception duties

Entry requirements

  • A keen interest in hairdressing and want to work with people.
  • You must meet deadlines and be committed to your course.
  • GCSE maths and English grade 4+/C grade is preferred. If you do not hold a grade 4 or C in English and/or maths you will be required to study Functional Skills as part of the course.
  • You will attend a work experience placement; you will take part in enrichment activities including competitions and additional courses.

Equipment

You will need a kit and uniform which we will explain at interview.

Assessment

  • Practical assessment on clients and online tests.
  • You will complete some assignments and may need to sit online exams for Functional Skills.

General comments

You must have professional values and behaviours and have excellent attendance.

What will the course lead to?

You may develop your skills more with an Apprenticeship or you could study hairdressing or beauty therapy. Another option is to work on cruise liners or further qualifications could lead to teaching/assessing and onto a degree or self employment.

Studies Level 2 Hairdressing Professional Apprenticeship. He works in a salon near Bridlington and attends The Academy one day per week. He enjoys all parts of the course especially styling.
